Have you ever had a bad day when everything just seems to go wrong? 

You’re not alone. A young boy named Alexander is having a very bad day, too. He doesn’t get what he wants while all his friends do. His mother forgets his dessert, a dentist discovers he has a cavity （蛀牙），and he gets in a fight. The worst part is that no one seems to care. 

In the children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day ( 1972 ) by US writer Judith Viorst, Alexander cannot escape dissatisfaction and injustice. Within 24 hours, this young boy just cannot catch a break. Although nothing seems to go right, much of what happens to Alexander is his own fault. 

His own bad mood makes everything worse and, like a snowball, rolls into bigger and bigger problems.

In this excerpt, Alexander’s day starts off wrong in every way and continues to get worse.
