今天选新概念三里简单的一段，仅仅展开两个词组的写作使用。

Children always appreciate small gifts of money. Mum or dad, of course, provide a regular supply of pocket money, but uncles and ants are always a source of extra income. With some children, small sums go a long way. If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside money boxes. Only very thrifty children manage to fill up a money box. For most of them, fifty pence is a small price to pay for a nice big bar of chocolate.

　孩子们总是喜欢得到一些零花钱。爸爸妈妈当然经常给孩子零花钱，但是，叔舅婶姨也是孩子们额外收入来源。对于有些孩子来说，少量的钱可以花很长一段时间。如果50便士不拿来换糖吃，则可以放在储蓄罐里叮当响上好几月。但是能把储蓄罐装满的只有屈指可数的几个特别节俭的孩子。对大部分孩子来说，用50便士来买一大块好的巧克力，是算不了什么的。

爸爸或妈妈，当然会经常给孩子一些零花钱

Mum or dad provide a regular supply of pocket money. 

这个“给”我们一般只会想到give,但这一课教给我们一个更好的表达：

a regular supply 定期的供应...

这份兼职工作让他有固定的收入来源。

The part-time job provides him a regular supply of income.

这棵树能给村民固定的收入来源。

The tree provides a regular supply of money for the villagers.

A supply of something is an amount of it which someone has or which is available for them to use. 供应“一批”

我们已经贮存了一批罐头肉。

We have laid in a supply of canned meat.

我们很多人追求复杂的词汇，却对一些很精巧的小词视而不见。

source 除了有“来源”的意思之外，还可以理解为“让、使得”、“得益于”、“赋予”、“带来”、“有”等意思。

我们来学习一下如何用 source 表达这些丰富的意思。

英英词典对source的解释：

the place something comes from or starts at, or the cause of something；someone or something that supplies information。

就是我们平时所说的“来源”、“出处”。

她最大的快乐就是读小说。

Reading novels is her greatest source of delight/joy.

“最开心的事情”、“做什么事情让人最开心：

“a source of delight”或“a source of joy”。

很多小说家往往会从著名的谋杀案中获得灵感。

Homicide cases is a source of inspiration for many novelists.

在过去两个多世纪里，美国的经济社会进步得益于它的政治制度。（奥巴马）

America’s political system has been the source of economic and social progress for more than two centuries.

the source of economic and social progress 就有“得益于”的意思。 

总结：a source of 后面经常会接抽象名词。

（delight, joy, inspiration, progress 等）

为什么有这么多聪明的点子呢？

Why is Japan the source of so many bright ideas?

在这个语境里，“a source of” 表达的意思其实就是“有”。

自由和自治赋予了人们尊严。

Liberty and autonomy are sources of human dignity.

这里的 source 就有“赋予”这层意思。

打拳击获得冠军并没有给阿里带来快乐。

Conquering the world, as he had done time after time with pure punching skill, did not now seem the source of true happiness.

“带来快乐”我们可能会说“bring somebody happiness”，但在这个句子里用的是“the source of true happiness”。

贫贱夫妻百事哀。

Money is often a source of tension in married couples.
