Other, the other和another不仅长相相似
而且都同时也是限定词和代词这两个意思
在使用时很容易出现混淆和书写错误
今天王老师就来带大家区分一下other们吧~
Other
other ="additional or extra", or "alternative", or "different types of".
other as a determiner
other作限定词使用时，可以与不可数名词，以及可数名词复数连用：
Some music calms people; other music has the opposite effect. (different types of music)
What other books by Charles Dickens have you read, apart from‘Oliver Twist’? (additional or extra books)
当other与可数名词单数连用时，需要在前面添加另一个限定词：
I don't like the red one. I prefer the other colour.
Jeremy is at university; our other son is still at school.
注：other作限定词使用时，没有复数形式（others）
Mandy and Charlotte stayed behind.The other girls went home. (The others girls...)
other as a pronoun
other作代词用时，根据上下文内容，可以使用复数形式。
We have to solve this problem, more than any other.
I’ll attach two photos to this email and I’ll send others tomorrow.
The other
the other as a determiner
the other与名词单数搭配时，指的是两个事物或人之中的第二个，也指事物的对立面：
This computer here is new. The other computer is about five years old.
The gift shop is on the other side of the street.
the other与名词复数搭配时，指的是一组人或事物中，剩下的那一部分：
Joel and Karen are here, but where are the other kids?
Where are the other two dinner plates? I can only find four.
the other as a pronoun
the other作代词时，用于指代在之前提到过的事物的另一个或替换：
He had his hat in one hand and a bunch of flowers in the other.
She has two kittens, one is black and the other is all white.
当用于指代多个人或事物时，the other也有复数形式the others：
Bob is on his way here, with the others.
Another
another as a determiner
another只能与名词单数搭配，指另一个，又一个：
Would you like another cup of coffee?
You’ve met Linda, but I have another sister who you haven’t met, called Margaret.
another as a pronoun
another作代词，同样指代在之前提到过的事物的另一个或替换：
The applications are examined by one teacher, then passed on to another.
