Teaching aims:
By the end of the class, students are expected to be able to:
1) use new words and “will” in the real situation: predict, prediction, reliable, weird, palmistry, astrology, horoscope, nonsense;
2) acquire relevant information for each method;
3) show their own opinions about fortune telling and what they can do to realize their future wishes.
Teaching procedures:
I. Pre-reading
1. Free talk: what do students want to know about their future?
2. Share a short video about predicting the future with students and answer two questions.
1) How does the boy predict the future?
2) What will happen to his friend?
II. While-reading
1. Skim the text and try to answer the following questions:
a. Do people use any methods to predict the future in the real life?
b. Do we use the same way as the movie we’ve watched?
2. Listen and read each part
2) Fortune cookies
a. Try to describe what fortune cookies are according to the pictures
b. Check your idea and find more detailed information
c. Why do lots of people still like them?
3) Palmistry
a. Have you met anyone who wants to read your palms?
b. Are there any special secrets on your palms?
4) Astrology
a. Four statements: T/F
III. Post-reading
Discussion:
What do you think of these methods? Are they reliable?
Why do people always want to know their future?
IV. Homework
List five questions about your future life and the methods you will use to help these statements come true.
