①Dear Mary,
How are you? I watched a horse riding competition yesterday evening.I watched this competition with my friend.I like horse riding because it’s very exciting.

大家看完这两个开头的第一感觉，应该都是①的开头给人的感觉更加亲切。
在书信类作文开头中，亲切的称呼是书信作文的良好开端，我们可以使用my dear...或dear...这类词语来开头。
另外，在①中，作者第一句话便写出了问候语How are you，相对于②开头直入主题来说，①的开头更加适用于书信类作文，也减少了阅读时的生硬感和距离感。
大家在写此类文章开头时，也可以引用诸如此类的问候语。比如：
Thank you for your letter.
Nice to hear from you.
How is it going?
...
